Cerberus Secure Backup - Windows Client Installation
Begin by downloading the Windows installer, you can always find the latest version at: http://www.cerberusnetworks.co.uk/Downloads/Software/latest/CSBClient.exe
To install the Cerberus Secure Backup (CSB) client on Microsoft Windows machines, follow the steps below:
- Double click the CSBClient.exe file that you downloaded and follow the instructions in the installation wizard. Click Next to begin the installation process.
- Go through the license agreement, select "I accept the agreement" and proceed to the Next step. If you are updating from an earlier version, you will be asked to confirm this.

- Cerberus Secure Backup – Configuring the Cerberus Secure Backup ID:
(CSB will skip this step and retain existing settings if it detects an earlier version installed)The CSB ID will be used to identify this installation of CSB on your network and the Cerberus Backup Servers. By default, CSB uses the machine name. Ideally, enter the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of this particular machine, e.g. fileserver.internaldomain.local. Using an FQDN makes it far more likely that your CSB ID will be unique – if you choose to use a generic ID, e.g. “Server”, then it is much more likely that your client registration will be refused when it attempts to authenticate against the Cerberus Backup Servers. Your CSB ID needs to be unique across the entire CSB customer base, however once your CSB ID has been accepted you can be assured that nobody else will be able to use the same ID you have chosen.
Note:The CSB ID is case insensitive, and will be automatically converted to lower case.
- CSB Installation Option:
Here you can choose to go with a Typical installation of CSB or choose Custom installation where you can specify the various options. - If you choose Typical installation, CSB will be installed in "C:\Program Files\Cerberus Networks Ltd\CerberusSecureBackup". In a Desktop (ie non-server) Microsoft OS CSB will be installed as a Windows Application and in a Server OS, CSB will be installed as a Service, with default WebConsole configuration. If you have limited space on the C: drive, choose Custom installation and select a different installation location.
- If you choose Custom installation, you can configure CSB to be installed as a Windows Service, at a desired location, with custom WebConsole configuration.
- Custom Installation Option:
Follow the below steps if you choose a Custom CSB installation.- CSB Installation Type (Windows Application or Service):
While installing CSB, you can either install CSB as a Windows Application or as a Windows Service.
CSB can be installed as a Windows Application and it will run in the background. Note that if you choose this mode, CSB will only start if the user who installed it logs in to the PC. If the user logs off, then CSB will exit.
Advanced users may choose to install CSB as a Windows Service. This would enable CSB to run in the background, even when no users are logged in to the system. This option is recommended for Servers where CSB has to be run 24x7 without a user logged in. To install as a Service, select "Install as a Windows service" and proceed to the next step.
- Cerberus Secure Backup Service Configuration:
By default, the CSB Service is selected to run from the Windows Local System Account. If you run the CSB service from the Local System Account, then CSB will not be able to automatically collect information on User specific backup configurations like Outlook Email/Outlook Express, My Documents, Desktop, and IE Settings data for backup. You will need to manually select the required files and folders.
If you want to run the CSB service from a Windows User account, then select this option and provide the User Name and the Password for the user account in the appropriate fields and click Next. In this case, the CSB Service will always run from this user account. Hence, CSB can correctly collect information on User specific backup configurations like Outlook/Outlook Express backup and IE Settings.
If your Windows user login is dependent on a Domain Controller, then select to run the CSB Service from the Windows Local System Account. You can manually configure CSB to run from a User account later by going to Control Panel -> Administrator Tools -> Services and changing the CSB service options to run as a user.
Note: Please make sure the User account configured for the CSB Service has 'Logon As Service' permission in Windows security policies. You will usually be prompted to allow this if you try to change the server to logon as a user without the correct permissions.
- Choose Installation Location:
(CSB will skip this step and retain existing settings if it detects an earlier version installed)
By default, CSB will be installed under "Cerberus Networks Ltd\CerberusSecureBackup" in the "C:\Program Files" directory. Click Next to continue installation in the default directory. Click Browse to choose a different directory. Note that this will create the "Cerberus Networks Ltd\CerberusSecureBackup" directory under the directory you choose. Click Next to continue.
If CSB detects existing data left behind from a previous installation of CSB (where you uninstalled the previous version but left some data behind) it will prompt you for a desired action. If no ‘old data’ was found in the installation directory or if you are simply upgrading from an existing installed version, CSB will skip this step.
- Cerberus Secure Backup Configuration:
(CSB will skip this step and retain existing settings if it detects an earlier version installed)
There are three parts to this step.
Configure Web Server Port: CSB's user interface is browser based. You have the option to configure the port used by CSB web server here. Once configured you need to use this port to start the CSB Web Console from your browser. By default CSB Web server is configured to run on port 6060. Unless you are an advanced user, please leave this as it is.
Username & Password: Since CSB's user interface is browser based, you need to configure a username and password to login to CSB Web Console. Note that you can add additional users, delete users, change password etc. from the Web Console UI after the installation. By default the username and password used by CSB is "admin" and "admin". You have the option to change these default settings here.
Advanced Port Configuration (Including HTTPS): Click on the Advanced Port Configurations (Including HTTPS) link to configure the CSB backup server port, UI communication port and HTTPS port. Provide valid TCP port numbers for Backup Server Port, UI Communication Port and HTTPS port. You will be able to configure 'Advanced Port Configuration' while upgrading CSB too. It’s recommended to leave the default values for these ports.
- Backup Server Port is the port through which the installed CSB client will back up the data to the backup server. The default value is 32004.
- UI Communication Port is the port through which CSB Apache/PHP modules communicate with CSB to serve UI requests from the CSB WebConsole. The default value is 32005.
- HTTPS Port: HTTPS Port is the port used to access the CSB Webconsole in a secure manner through the HTTPS protocol. Default value is 6061.
- Enable HTTPS: If you enable the HTTPS option, then you can access the CSB webconsole through https://<machine name>:<HTTPS port>. If you try to access the CSB webconsole through http://<machine name>:<webconsole port>, then you will be automatically redirected to https://<machine name>:<HTTPS port>.

- Select Program Folder:
(CSB will skip this step and retain existing settings if it detects an earlier version installed)
Click Next to select the Programs Folder to add the CSB shortcuts (ideally, leave it as it is). Proceed to the next step to select required icons. For ease of use, allow the CSB installer to create a desktop icon & a quick launch icon.

Click Next to review your settings. Once reviewed, click Install, and proceed to install CSB. If you are updating from an earlier version, you will be informed that CSB will now stop and restart after the installation.

After copying the CSB files, a page will show the progress of the CSB installation. If the CSB installation completes successfully, you will be automatically redirected to the finished installation page. Otherwise, the installation progress page will show any error details.
If this is the first time you have used CSB, have a look at the README file when prompted: it will help you get started.

Note:
- A shortcut to start CSB and access the CSB Web Console will be created on the System Tray and in the Start -> Programs -> Cerberus Secure Backup menu.
- After successful installation, you can open the CSB Web Console by right-clicking the CSB icon in your system tray and selecting the CSB Web Console from the menu, or alternatively, doing the same through the Start -> Programs -> Cerberus Secure Backup -> CSB Web Console menu. You will have to login to the Web Console using the username and password you provided in the "Cerberus Secure Backup Configuration" screen during the installation.

Troubleshooting: Problems Starting CSB in Windows Vista/2008/7
If CSB is installed under C:/Program Files in Windows Vista/2008/7, then make sure you run CSB with the option "Run as Administrator". This is because Vista and later versions of Windows allow an application to access the 'Program Files' folder only when run as an administrator user. You can enable the 'Run as Administrator' option for the
If you don't have administrator access or if you don't want to run CSB under the administrator account, make sure you install CSB under your user account folder or other than the 'Program Files' folder.
